PostSubject: Roman Architecture   Sun Nov 22, 2009 12:37 pm

The Romans were masters of building. Their Architecture used all their skills of engineering, building, and the invention of concrete. These skills allowed them to build forts, villas, baths, wall, and roads that would completely change how society woked.

The Romans were the inventors of many types of buildings and structures including:
  • Forums
  • Basilicas
  • Baths
  • Amphitheaters
  • Villas
  • Temples
  • Roads
  • Forts
  • Aquaducts
  • Entire Towns

These structures all promoted the welfare of someone in the city. The aquaducts and public baths for cleanliness, The Ampitheaters were for enternainment, Villas for the rich, forts and roads for protection, roads for trade, and temples to please the gods.

Along with providing for the good of the people, the great stone and marble structures displayed to the known world their wealth. Building roads with this wealth, 51,000 miles of them, sparked the saying "All roads lead to Rome"

The arch is the main support behind most Roman constructions. It allowed the eleven aquaducts around rome to be built, along with many bridges.

Domes were also important in Roman construction. The dome allowed large vaulted ceilings to be built, making large open spaces to fit a public bath, or a basilica.
